PEPPERONI showcases extensive presence at the EU PVSEC conference

An exciting event for the PEPPERONI consortium and the photovoltaic (PV) community alike, the 41st European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition (EU PVSEC) will take place in Vienna, Austria, from 23-27 September. Over these few days, the PEPPERONI project will engage in multiple activities, providing an excellent platform for project partners to share their results, communicate project progress, and discuss challenges in emerging PV technologies with various stakeholders.

PEPPERONI partners take the stage

During the conference, the PEPPERONI partners will address various topics related to PV technologies, including perovskite/silicon tandem cells and modules development for higher efficiency, encapsulation mechanisms, scaling up manufacturing processes and performance testing of solar cells and modules.

From the comprehensive programme, we invite you to attend the following sessions for direct insights from the PEPPERONI project:

Tuesday 24 September

  • Recent Developments in PV Module Backsheets – What Do We Really Know About Them? (Gernot Oreski, Chiara Barretta from PCCL), as part of the session on Reliability of PV Modules: The Impact of Polymers (10:30 – 12:00)
  • Panel Discussion on Stable Perovskite Tandems: Hype or Hope? (Carolin Ulbrich, HZB, 13:30 – 15:00)

Wednesday 25 September

  • Perovskite PV Outdoors: From Single-Junction Single Cells to Mini-Modules and Tandems (Mark Khenkin, HZB) as part of the plenary session on Performance and Reliability | Thin Films and Tandems (10:20 – 12:00)
  • Benchmarking of Encapsulant Materials for c-Si/Perovskite Tandem Modules (Petra Christöfl from PCCL) as part of the session on Materials and Processes for PV Modules (15:15 – 16:45)
  • Characterisation of Degradation Pathways of 3-Terminal Perovskite/Silicon Tandems After Outdoor Monitoring (Miha Kikelj, ULjub) as part of the session on Triple Junctions and Advanced Concepts in Perovskite-based Tandems (15:15 – 16:45)

Thursday 26 September

  • Large Scale Deposition of Perovskite Solar Cells and Modules by a Combined Evaporation and Slot-die Coating Approach (Adriana Paracchino, Ricardo Augusto Zanotto Razera, CSEM) as part of the session on Process Innovations for Perovskite Devices (10:30 – 12:00)

PEPPERONI Industry Workshop

To ensure devices remain reliable and perform consistently over time, it is necessary to conduct tailored ageing tests. These tests simulate real-world conditions over the lifespan of the modules. An exclusive workshop hosted by the PEPPERONI project, titled Best Practices for Testing Perovskite/Silicon Tandem Solar Cells: Indoor and Outdoor” will be held at the exhibition booth of our project partner, the Laboratory of Photovoltaics and Optoelectronics (LVPO, the University of Ljubljana). Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the potential degradation mechanisms of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells and modules, as explored by the PEPPERONI project. Additionally, the session will provide practical insights into best practices for testing protocols across different climatic conditions.

Pararell event of Innovation projects

PEPPERONI will also join forces with other European Innovation projects IBC4EU and  PILATUS in a parallel event on Manufacturing Innovative PV Technologies in the EU – Chances and Challenges. Held on Wednesday 25 at 17:00, the session, followed by the panel discussion of industry and academia representatives, will serve as an excellent opportunity to present different approaches to advancing PV technology manufacturing in the EU. Points to be addressed include possible growth, technological advancements, and market demands, alongside cost competitiveness, supply chain dependencies, and regulatory complexities, thereby facilitating an effective exchange of knowledge.

Joint Booth with EU-funded Projects

Cross-project initiatives not only enhance knowledge sharing but also demonstrate the dedicated PV research community in Europe tackling the challenges of perovskite PV technologies. As you can learn from our first newsletter, PEPPERONI has joint collaborative efforts with ten EU-funded projects focused on perovskite technology. As part of this collaboration, six projects, including PEPPERONI, NEXUS, VALHALLA, PEARL, LUMINOSITY, and DIAMOND decided to create a dedicated space to facilitate these collaborations and cross-project interactions during the conference at the joint booth. With each project bringing their own experience a vivid exchange across European projects will be made possible.

Further contributions from the PEPPERONI partners

Continuing the array of PEPPERONI’s activities, project partners will present their related research in PV technologies, fostering knowledge sharing, establishing potential collaborations and discussing how to most optimally tackle the challenges to advancing perovskite/silicon tandem technologies for wide adoption of more efficient PV modules in Europe and beyond.

Anticipation is building for the EU PVSEC conference in September. The event will not only show PEPPERONI’s dedication to advancing perovskite/silicon tandem PV technology but also foster collaboration within the PV community. The knowledge and insights shared are expected to propel the project forward, driving innovation and enhancing its impact on the solar energy value chain.
